Michael Maloney reads this original adventure by Dan Abnett, featuring the 11th Doctor, Amy, and Rory. For centuries, the Maintainers have worked. With no help from other worlds, they subsist on the food they can grow and that's little enough. But their purpose, their whole life, is to maintain the machines that will one day make their world as habitable as old Earth. Life used to be hard. Now as crops fail, livestock sicken, and the temperature drops, it's becoming impossible. This year's Winter Season Feast won't be the usual celebration. It's no time for optimism or hope - or to welcome unexpected guests.
The Doctor, Amy, and Rory find a society breaking apart - and then the Doctor's old enemies the Ice Warriors make their move. With the cold-hearted threat of invasion, the real battle for survival begins. Or does it? The Doctor suspects that behind everything lies a deadlier, even more chilling danger....
A thrilling adventure featuring the Doctor, Amy, and Rory, as played by Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill in the spectacular hit series from BBC Television.

The TARDIS takes a wrong turn on the way to Leadworth to drop the Ponds off for Christmas and The Doctor, Amy, and Rory find themselves on a far flung colony world that is in the grips of the worst winter the world has ever seen. But what's causing the hellish weather? And what's killing the livestock? And can the Doctor and the Ponds get to the bottom of things before it's too late?Of course they can! After all, he's The Doctor.
The Silent Stars Go By sees the Doctor and Amy get separated from Rory early on, wandering around the frozen colony world of Hereafter. If only Rory hadn't gone back to the TARDIS for a heavier coat. After some mistaken identity shenanigans and disbelieving colonists, the meat of the story gets flung on the table in all it's frozen glory in the form of classic Who enemies, The Ice Warriors.
Abnett does a fairly good job. Rory and the Doctor both ring true to form from the TV series. It was hard not to hear the actor's voices in my head while reading. Amy, on the other hand, doesn't get to do much and is on the weaker side of things.
TSSGB felt like an old adaptation of a Doctor Who episode, lots of banter, running from things, and timey-whimey, which was the main problem I had with it. The whole thing felt really thin, like maybe Abnett had written a Doctor Who script at some point and slapped a few descriptions on it. The book was very dialogue-heavy and I could almost pick out where the commercial breaks would go.
Still, it wasn't all bad. There was a twist at the 75% mark, just like a lot of Doctor Who episodes, that was unexpected and saved the book from being a monster of the week affair. Abnett did a lot more with the Ice Warriors than I thought he would and the colony had some secrets of its own. Overall, I enjoyed the experience but I really wanted to love it

Doctor Who The Silent Stars Go By (Audible Audio Edition) Dan Abnett Michael Maloney BBC Worldwide Limited Books Reviews
When I learned about the 50th anniversary line of books, I got rather excited. I'd never read a Doctor Who novel before, but I love reading fanfiction so I figured I'd be pretty happy with them. I only purchased Nine, Ten, and Eleven's novels, because there was no way I could afford to buy all of them and I'm much more familiar with those three than I am with the Classic Doctors, sadly. Of the three novels, this one was by far my favorite.
To put it simply, I loved reading this book. The character voices were spot-on, and the whole thing just felt very much like an Eleventh Doctor adventure. (It actually reminded me a bit of The Hungry Earth / Cold Blood, from series five. Had a similar feeling about it.) It had its weak spots, as anything will, but the great parts easily overcame them. I will definitely be rereading it at some point.
It was funny and sad and touching and wonderful, and I would definitely recommend it for anyone who's looking for an excellent dose of Eleven and the Ponds.
I haven't read a Doctor Who book before, but I am a huge fan of the TV series so I thought I'd give it a try. The story features the 11th Doctor and his companions Amy and Rory. The dialogue, especially between Amy and the Doctor was quite good and I enjoyed that Rory got more of a role in this story than he has typically does on the show.
The Doctor promised Amy and Rory that he'd have them back in London for Christmas, but they end up on a world occupied by colonists from Earth who have spent the last 27 generations terraforming the planet with the goal of making it warmer. Inexplicably, the last several winters have been snowy and much, much colder than it should be. While searching for a missing colonist, the Doctor and company discover one of the Doctors most interesting foes; the Ice Warriors of Mars. They too are trying to terraform the planet, with the goal of making it much colder. To this regard, they have sabotaged the colonists' terraforming machinery.
There is another force at work on the planet that is allied with neither the colonists nor the Ice Warriors. Can the Doctor and his companions save the day? Of course they can, but the fun is in the telling.
Abnett starts his foreword with the idea that every Whovian has their Doctor that first introduced them to the show. A true fact, since there is always one Doctor that most fans feel a particular affinity to--and their first Doctor always holds a special place in their heart, even if it's not their favorite Doctor.
Abnett certainly nailed the chemistry that made Eleven and the Pond's so beloved by fans--their banter was effortless, and totally sounded like Matt Smith's Doctor. A mark of great writing when the reader can hear the actors in their head as they read and it sounds truly authentic.
As always, this plot finds the Doctor and the Ponds slightly very far from their intended destinations--Leadworth, to be home in time for Christmas. Instead we find our heroes on a planet being terraformed by people who have been displaced by the expansion of our sun, thus destroying Earth. Unfortunately, the destruction of our planet means the destruction of other lifeforms homes in our solar system, bringing us our foes for this novel--Ice Warriors from Mars.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD--proceed with caution!
The Morphans, 27th generation removed Earthlings, unknowingly find themselves the victims of the Ice Warriors hijacking their terraformers. Of course the Doctor quickly sniffs out that there is something amiss and stumbles his way into solving the problem. After the Doctor is captured by the Ice Warriors, and embarrasses himself by showing off his credentials with the Martians (before his credentials have been established in their history), he hatches a plan to save the Morphans's home, dubbed Hereafter, and still find the Ice Warriors a suitable home in the solar system. I won't divulge the Morphan/Ice Warrior common enemy, that is an interesting twist for each reader to discover on their own, but the story was enticing and exciting, and all around a fun read for fans of the Eleventh Doctor.
