P. Lovecraft.McIlvaine's Star was published in the July 1952 issue of IF magazine. Even though this is an older story, it does not suffer from a lot of dated science. Alien contact and misunderstanding form the framework for the plot.

one of my all time favorite authors and favorite re read
I love August Derleth and while Augie can admittedly be a little spotty, this is an excellent yarn. I recommend.
This is the only story by this author I have read so far, and I really liked it. I highly recommend it.
It's darkly humorous.
Astronomer discovers dark star and alien advanced race that rejuvenates him from a distance but it goes wrong as his mind is rejuvenated too.
If you even bothered to read a review, or thought you might like this, then stop reading this review and read the damn thing. really, it's free, and it's Derleth. Don't let some silly Lovecraft purism make you think that is any way a negative, it rocks.
A very intriguing tale of first contact by a odd man and how the locals made a laughing stock of him. I found it very enjoyable and have discovered the pleasure of an author I should have retained in my youth , when I was gobbling up every form of science fiction or fantasy I could find. This writer has the knack of grabbing one,s interest in a few paragraphs and taking you to Neverland.
August Derleth was one of the early acolytes of H.P. Lovecraft; he founded Arkham House to publish Lovecraft's short stories in book form, and wrote his own horror fiction in the Lovecraftian mode.
Derleth also wrote a few science fiction stories, which were quite different in tone and style. This is a humorous short story (published in If in 1952) about an eccentric inventor whose incredulous buddies don't believe his claims to have contacted an alien civilization. No classic of SF, but not a bad way to spend a few minutes.
